One Year On
This is the advice that I would give myself at 10 weeks in, when I discovered about post concussion syndrome, from the vantage point of where I am now a year later, still on the journey of recovery.
Just get used to having brain breaks (eye mask and earplugs) and naps during the day.
Don’t stop reaching out for help and support as the months go by.
Keep doing the basics - nutrition, walks, physio, rest, breathing.
Keep learning. There’s a lot to know about brain injury and luckily you’ll find it interesting.
Build things up at half the pace that you think is reasonable. Boom and bust is real and yes, it will happen to you.
Keep seeking out fun, laughter, beauty and cuddles. There is still much to be grateful for.
When things are hard, remember that this too will pass. Really, it will.
When things are good, take your foot off the gas; you’re not out of the woods yet, lady. You seriously need to learn how to slow down.
Cry whenever you need to. You’ll come to think that everyone should have a therapist, even you.
You’re more resilient than you know. You’re strong and determined and you will overcome. Just do today.
